Same Day~ Five Hours Later
Violet
My mind replayed today’s events repetitively in my head like I was rewinding a movie back to my favorite part. I laughed hard as hell as I thought about how that bitch hit the floor with the look of terror in her eyes. She knew she had fucked up right then. She bled out quickly too, like she was a faucet of running water. Vega was stupid to fuck with me. To celebrate, I went on a shopping spree on the Magnificent Mile.
I hit the Burberry, Gucci, Chanel and Anne Fontaine stores like I had been shopping there forever. They greeted me like I was the bitch of the hour with a pocket full of cash and an eye for style. When I broke in Vega’s car the other day before I lit it on fire, I snooped to check out what he kept in there. I found a box under the seat marked “Petty Cash”. I had caught him on a day that he usually returned the cash he borrowed from his work stash. Guess all that pillow talking paid off.
My laughter grew as I pulled up in front of Cookie’s house. I figured I could lay low there for a little while before I pulled myself back together and figured out which city I wanted to hit up next. Chicago was over for me. I needed a change of scenery to be able to begin a new with some fresh faces. I snatched my five bags from the back seat and skipped to the front door. I headed in not even paying attention to Cookie resting easy, snoring with her mouth open in her favorite spot on the couch. I didn’t even bother to go in and turn on the light before tossing the bags in my room like old trash then I headed into the kitchen to get Pepsi.
“Little girl, is that you in there?” Cookie called out groggily.
“I’m not a little girl. Please don’t piss me off today,” I snarled walking back into the living taking a few sips of my soda. “Besides, who else would it be?”
“Bobby has keys.”
“Ugh, I swear you need to get your life with that shit. I mean, he’s never gonna leave his wife so you should really get over him,” I laughed so hard I almost spit my soda out on the dingy carpet.
“Well, well, well. Look at the pot calling the kettle black. I seemed to recall a little ghetto wannabe prim and proper bird dating a married man herself. Speaking of that, how’s that been working out for you lately? You see, cause I’m paid. My man may not be mine but he for damn sure takes care of me.” Cookie sat up snatching her Newport box from the coffee table. “What can you say about your shit?”
“Hmm, all I’m saying is he may be married but not for long.”
“What does that mean, Violet?”
“Just what it means. He may not be my man no more but he for damn sure won’t be hers either.” My eyes rolled hating the way she called me out on shit.
I turned my head noticing a tall dark figure creeping from out of my room. My eyes blinked hard to focus trying to get my vision from playing tricks on me. I turned to Cookie with a look of perplexity wondering what she had done. All I could think about was the level of betrayal she had just shown me. She wasn’t my mother. She had never been a real fucking mother figure to me ever and with this act of bullshit she was only proving that to be evident.
“What the hell is he doing here?” I pointed damn near dropping my soda.
Right in the same room with me and Cookie stood Adrial and he had a look that was so vile I couldn’t bring myself to look straight into his eyes. It was like seeing a ghost as he stepped further into the light revealing his all black attire and combat boots. He came ready for battle and me without my motherfucking gun. Instead of focusing in on him, I focused in on Cookie who appeared unscathed by my hawking. She looked as if she knew exactly what she was doing and didn’t give a fuck about doing it.
“What the hell is going on, Cookie?” I shouted.
“I told you to call me mom. You just never listen, brat.” Cookie flamed up her long cigarette.
“Hello, Violet. Did you miss me baby?” Adrial smiled at me.
“If you come near me motherfucka, I’ll—“
“What?” He guffawed. “Shoot my dick off? Oh I think that ship has sailed, don’t you?”
Truthfully, inside I was shaking like a stripper on a Friday night when her rent was due. A cold breeze shot past me giving me the chills. I thought I would never have that feeling ever again. It seemed like I was going to hell in a hand basket fast. My life had definitely took a turn for the worst in a little under a year and by the look on Adrial’s face it would seem that it was about to get even worse.
“What do you want, Adrial?” I growled.
“Oh I think you know what I want baby. I want what you started. You started it and now I’m going to finish it,” he replied.
“How are you going to do that? Huh?” I turned to Cookie. “Cookie, you’re just gonna sit there while he fucks me up? Huh? You’re just gonna sit there and do nothing like you did the last time? Or did we forget that shit too?”
“Violet, I can’t keep apologizing for what happened to you as a kid. I tried to help you but you didn’t want my help. You’re grown now and it’s high time you started taking responsibility for your actions. You’ve gotten outta control so much that I had to even go warn the poor guy you took pictures of before you fucked his life up too.” Cookie raised her voice.
“You did what?” My eyes squinted towards her. “I can’t bel
ieve you’re intruding in on my life. You have no right to do that. Everything that come out of your mouth, Cookie, is a got-damn lie and you know it.”
“I’m your mother. I have every fucking right. I brought you in this world and I have the authority to say when I should take you out.” Cookie looked away waving her hand as Adrial moved closer to me.
“Enough of this shit. I have some things that I want us to do tonight and it is going to be fuuuunnnnnn,” he grinned licking his lips before wrapping his arms around me.
“Get the fuck off me,” I yelled biting his arm to get free before bolting for the front door. “Bitch you’re tricksy as hell. You’re a false bitch. You wait Cookie. You’ll burn in hell for this shit bitch.”
I kicked back like a mule as Adrial rushed towards me. I got my hand on the doorknob but he pulled me anyway. Turning around, I stuck my fingers into his eyes but he shook his head so hard that they had no grip on him. Instead, I beat him with my fists with everything I had in me. I beat his chest, his arms, and his face as he snatched me up by my waist dragging me kicking and screaming back into the living room. Through all of the struggle, I could hear Cookie give him pointers on how to take me down. It was then that any glimmer of respect that I had for her, faded away in an instant.
“You motherfuckas will pay for this shit. You hear me?” I barked, snarling my teeth in the process.
“And you will pay for your sins as well bitch. You’re no motherfucking saint. You’ll be in the same place we’re going it’s just that you’ll be there before us.” Adrial stomped me in my stomach with his oversized foot to calm me down from my fight.
“Why Cookie? I never did anything to you? Why?” I asked curling over in agony.
“You tried to poison me when you were ten. Oh but how soon do we forget that shit?” She puffed long and hard on her cigarette. “You poured anti-freeze in my iced tea.”
“You deserved that shit. You were a bitch ass mother. I only wanted to make you really sick, not kill your dumb ass,” I coughed. “Your ass is still alive ain’t you?”
“And now you won’t be,” she breathed. “You know, I never wanted children and I never should’ve had you. I knew you would be trouble from the first moment I laid eyes on you. You’re a plague on everyone you touch. So I guess you could say I’m saving the world from your bullshit.”
“You stupid fat blimp. I could never stand your ass. I hope you die a slow violent death you simple bitch,” I griped as Adrial reacquainted his foot with my stomach and I rolled around in agony.
Refusing to let tears fall from my eyes, I looked up into the eyes of the woman who was supposed to love and protect me, seeing nothing but coldness. The woman who was supposed to bring me into this world with unconditional love only had pure hatred for me. I knew then that she never loved me. I was a distraction, an inconvenience on her life when I never even asked to be born. I think that was the one thing that pissed me off the most. I never asked to be born. Cookie was right about one thing though. She should’ve never had me.
I felt Adrial’s foot meet with my stomach once more before he turned me over on my stomach pricking me through my jeans in the butt with something sharp as hell. Immediately, I felt woozy and nauseated all at once. The son of bitch had drugged me with some shit that made me feel like I was about to barf all on that nasty ass carpet. I’ve got to be honest. I never thought this was how this shit would end for me.
I thought I would go out guns blazing, toe-to-toe with a motherfucka who respected the heart it took to be a bitch like me. I imagined I would go out with someone who had just as much heart as me. Instead, I’m about to get wasted by a clown, a fucking coward. And, just when I thought large chunks of disgusting vomit would exit my mouth without fail, I briefly felt sleepy as hell and couldn’t hold my eyes open any longer.
Vega
Shit. I awoke wiping the slobber from the crevices of my mouth. The dream I was having almost made me not even want to awake from it. I should’ve kept on dreaming and then I wouldn’t have to wake up to the reality of my wife lying helpless and unconscious in a hospital bed. The room was cold and held an eerie silence. If it weren’t for the beeping of the machines being a constant reminder of her state, I might not have been sent deeper into my depression.
Checking out the time on my phone it was already 9:25pm. I wouldn’t be able to make it home to get my car to head out to meet up with Adrial. Honestly, I didn’t want to leave Angel. The more I thought about it, the worse I felt about it. I straightened my clothes as the nurse entered the room to administer Angel’s nightly dose of pain medication. I watched closely to make sure she did it right. It wasn’t that I didn’t trust her it was just a natural reaction, the doctor in me.
“You look tired, doctor,” she smiled walking over to me when she was done.
“I am tired actually,” I replied yawning giving my arms a good stretch.
“Awe you’re such a great husband. You should go home and get some rest. Your wife is in great hands. We’ll call you if there’s any change in her status.” The nurse lightly touched my shoulder to comfort me.
“No, home is the last place I want to be right now.” I thought about the earlier scene and what took place there wondering what it looked like now. “Aye, I do need to step out for a brief while though. Is there anyway you can personally keep an eye on my wife for me and call me with any changes if anything happens?”
“You’re so worried. Your wife’s vitals are all good right now. She’s stable. You can go out and not worry about her. But yes I will call if anything happens.” The nurse smiled at me before leaving the room.
Her words put me a bit at ease. I looked at the machines noticing that Angel was comfortable. Her vitals and the baby’s heartbeat were all fine. Kissing my still wife on her forehead, I walked out the room hurriedly. The faster I got to Adrial the quicker I could get back to her. Hopping on and off the elevator in no time, I hailed a yellow cab from the long waiting line in front of the hospital and jumped in.
I pulled my cell out of my pocket trying to call Adrial but he wasn’t answering the phone. Back to back, my calls went straight to the voicemail. I knew he was probably partying having way too much fun with the hoes he had found to come. I shouldn’t have even been going. Guilt shot through my mind telling me I had no business leaving my ailing wife.
The shit was crazy and I had told the cab driver to turn around twice before finally settling on heading to Adrial’s spot. As we pulled in front of the house, I noticed all of the lights were on. There was definitely a fucking party going on but surprisingly he didn’t have any music blasting. I was repulsed with myself. I should’ve stayed my stupid ass at the damn hospital.
“Thanks for getting me here so quickly brother.” I handed the driver the thirty dollars displayed on the meter. “Can you sit here and wait on me to take me back to the hospital?”
“No, no. I cannot wait sir. I will miss other fares. I need to make money tonight for my daughter’s birthday tomorrow, you see,” the African driver spoke in a thick accent.
“Yes, sir. I understand. If you wait for me, I will give you double the fair when we get back to the hospital.” I patted his shoulder. “How’s that?”
“Very good sir. Thank you sir. Okay I’ll wait.”
“Good. I shouldn’t be long.” I exited the cab thrilled that he agreed. “Please don’t leave me. I have no way to get back to the city.”
He nodded his head in agreement. Heading up the house and ringing the doorbell, I moved to the window closest to the door trying to get a peek inside. I tried Adrial’s phone again but he still wasn’t answering. There should have been someone inside listening enough to hear the doorbell and be able to let me. The windows were papered with newspaper so it was difficult for me to see anything on the inside.
“What you doing out here looking through windows and shit, boi?” Adrial finally appeared at the door.
“Man, you said 10pm and you’re in here fucking with hoes so d
eep that you can’t even hear me ring the doorbell,” I said regaining my composure from him startling me as I stepped inside. “What, uh, what’s going Adrial?”
“What do you mean?”
“You said you were leaving the city so I just assumed you were throwing a damn party. You said it was going to be epic.” Confusion was all in my face as I looked around at the empty room.
“Oh it is a party bro. Let me take you to it,” he said waving his hand for me to follow behind him.
“Man, bro. You’re scaring me talking like that. Just tell me what the fuck is going on. I left my wife alone in a hospital bed for this.” I was becoming furious by the minute.
“Don’t worry bro. I got you. I know you’ve gotta get back to Angel. Don’t trip.” He continued to lead me to the back of the house and down the basement stairs.
Adrial turned the light on leading to the back of the basement to a closed door. By now, I was thinking this nigga was either off his rocker or he had a few bitches behind that door ready to suck and fuck for White Castle burgers. I wasn’t in the mood for either. He stood at the door with his hand on it ready to push but took a look back at me with a sly grin. The look in his eye was crazed. His forehead was sweaty and I didn’t even notice before that his shirt was removed with sweat all over his torso.
“What’s going on man? You’re fucking scaring me up here dude,” I growled. “Why the fuck am I here?”
“Revenge bro, revenge.” Adrial pushed open the door and stepped in.
I followed him inside and almost couldn’t stomach the scene. The empty room held only a dirty bloody mattress with Violet’s unconscious body on it. Her body was riddled with badly bleeding cuts from head to toe and she wore some sort of black muzzle on her face. Her hands were handcuffed raised above her head and so were her ankles. I knew it was she from the body. I remembered her beautiful figure even though now it was torn nearly to shreds.
